Byron Bay is officially the most easterly point of the Australian mainland.
The Byron Bay lighthouse provides one of the best on-land vantage points for
observing the annual migration of the humpback whale.
The town exudes a laid-back vibe, which is due to the large number of artists
and artisans who reside in Byron Bay. Byron Bay’s main street
offers hip cafés, boutique shopping, casual dining options and an array of local
arts and crafts stores.
For those who scuba dive or are keen to learn, Byron Bay provides an excellent
setting. Most scuba diving and snorkelling is conducted at
Julian Rocks, just off the coast, which offers a substantial variety of marine
life.
Byron Bay is a surfing mecca, with beautiful breaks at Cosy Corner, The Pass and
Watego’s beaches.
Byron Bay also caters to those seeking an adrenaline rush, with skydiving and
hang-gliding available to tourists.
For the more sedate there are opportunities to kayak with dolphins, horse ride
along the beach, play golf and fish.
The region also has a thriving health and wellbeing industry, with many day
spa’s located in the area (including Olivia Newton-John’s
Gaia retreat & spa).
Several large festivals held in Byron Bay each year result in an influx of
people gathering in the Byron Bay area.
The Blues and Roots Festival and
Splendour in the Grass are two major
festivals which occur in Byron Bay each year.
